A few words about this house museum
Presenting the Axarquia house museum is an opportunity for me to name its creator. He is a man with a passion for his land and local crafts.
It is Antonio Montañez Lisbona whom I had the chance to meet. Visiting his house-museum, this unusual place in Andalucia, was a beautiful discovery and a pure joy.
His house museum is located in El Valdes, a hamlet attached to the village of Moclinejo.
It is therefore in the province of Malaga, in Axarquia.
The house was built to showcase all the local crafts, especially ceramics, on the outside.
Today, the house he built has earned him the local nickname of Gaudí of Axarquia.
The ceramics around the house
The small square behind the house is worth a visit. There are an incredible number of ceramics, all made and donated to the city by Mr. Montañez Lisbona.
Through the promotion of ceramics, a living local craft, there is a moving tribute to the picapiedros (stone breakers). A work of hard labour from centuries past.
The square in the hamlet of El Valdes has also been decorated!
The entrance to the hamlet, where this curious house-museum is located, is also decorated with ceramics to welcome you:
Visit the Axarquia House Museum
Here you can see 200 works by local artists. Most of them are paintings.
The house museum can be visited on certain Saturdays.
You should ask for the dates and confirm your visit at futuravisual@hotmail.com or by telephone on (0034) 671 345 462.
A fee of 5 euros is charged for the visit.
The axarco, the local currency that disappeared in the early 2000s, is also on display. There are also a number of objects from the house from the last century.
The decoration in the basement may even seem so busy and iconoclastic that it reminds one a little of Gabriele D’Annunzio’s house in Gardone Riviera. But the comparison ends there.
Its owner has even continued the decoration of his house-museum with the elements next to his house…
By letting his imagination run wild!
