A few words about Cabo de Gata
Cala de Enmedio is a small, secluded beach in the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park. It is located in the municipality of Níjar in the province of Almería in Andalucia.
The Cabo de Gata-Níjar land-sea nature park has been declared a biosphere reserve by UNESCO.
Cala de Enmedio is a real natural gem. It is a 150-metre-long beach of extraordinary beauty. It’s an unspoilt beach offering optimal conditions for safe bathing.
This cove is a pristine beach without any type of service, rubbish bins or cleaning service, so we must be respectful and keep the area clean.
Note: it is advisable to bring water, a cap, an umbrella and sun protection.

How do I get to Cala de Enmedio?
This magnificent cove is only accessible on foot, by kayak or by boat.
There is a road in poor condition that only very well-equipped 4×4 vehicles can use. But it would be a shame to go that way in this unspoilt natural setting.
Here are the two ways to get to Cala de Enmedio:
From Cala del Plomo
About 200 metres from the Cala del Plomo car park, you’ll find the remains of an old waterwheel with an environmental sign on the right, and that’s where the trail begins.
The route is 1.7 kilometres long and, as it is not very steep, can be completed in around 20 minutes.
From the charming seaside town of Agua Amarga
At the end of Calle Depósito there is a sign indicating the start of the route. Next to it is a small space where you can leave your car.
This route is the same length as the previous one, 1.7 km. It’s not a very demanding path, but you should still avoid going in flip-flops 🙂
Go to Cala de Enmedio by kayak
Another option for reaching the beach is by sea. You can hire a kayak at Agua Amarga to get there. It takes longer to get there, but the kayak ride is beautiful.

The views from the beach are fantastic, with the village of Agua Amarga on the other side of the bay and the Mesa Roldán hill with its lighthouse and castle behind it.

What makes Cala de Enmedio unique
On both sides of the crystal-clear beach are white, fossilised dunes, sometimes in the shape of still waves, along the shoreline.
The fossilisation of the dunes and subsequent erosion have created this incredible sculpture.
Time and erosion have also created small pools through which water seeps in, making it even more attractive.
The contrast between the white of the dunes and the blue of the sea is striking. It’s actually quite difficult to show in photographs. It’s incredibly more beautiful on location.
Cala de Enmedio has been recognised by 2 prestigious magazines
- an article in the New York Times magazine refers to the beauty of this cove.
- in 2012, the Repsol guide declared Cala de Enmedio one of the 10 most beautiful spots in Spain.
