A few words about Rincon de la Victoria
Rincon de la Victoria is located in Axarquia in the province of Malaga. The town is just a few minutes away from Malaga.
It is the main town on the eastern Costa del Sol, together with the capital Velez-Malaga.
Rincon de la Victoria offers almost 9 kilometres of beaches, between Cala del Moral and Torre de Benagalbon. It is a very popular place for holidays and for its proximity to Malaga.
The origin of Rincon de la Victoria
The first traces of mankind date back to the Paleolithic period, with cave paintings in the Victoria cave, right next to the Treasure cave.
Phoenician and Roman remains have also been found (Roman baths and mosaics). One cultural heritage remains from the Phoenicians. It is the famous Phoenician eye painted on the boats, and mainly on the jabegas.
Just outside Rincon, in Torre de Benagalbon, it is possible to see very well preserved Roman remains.
Thanks to the writings of Pliny the Elder, we know that there was a fortress in the 1st century AD. Around the fortress a hamlet developed.
During the period of Al-Andalus, the nascent city developed and had a certain importance. It had the rank of Medina (city).
After the reconquest by the Catholic kings and the expulsion of the Moriscos in 1570, the inhabitants fled the coast because of frequent attacks by Berber pirates. The village of Benagalbon, in the mountains, developed a few kilometres from here.
Rincon de la Victoria would only regain the favour of the villagers and inhabitants in the 20th century, with the arrival of the train.

The fortress castle of Bezmiliana (original name of the village)
In the 18th century, Charles III ordered the reconstruction of the watchtowers to guard the coast and the construction of the fortress of Bezmiliana.
At that time, the king feared an English attack from Gibraltar, so he decided to build this fortress to have a military garrison ready to respond in case of an attack. This fortress gave its name to the village: Venta de Bezmiliana.
Its name was changed to Rincón de la Victoria at the beginning of the 20th century, a name derived from the Order of Minims of the Convent of La Victoria in Malaga.
Right next to the fortress you can find a curious sculpture. It is the abduction of Europa by Zeus:
The watchtower, “Torre del Cantal”, from the 14th century
The watchtowers on the coast around Rincon de la Victoria were built by order of the Nasrid king – kingdom of Granada – Yusuf I. Their function was to prevent pirate attacks.
The view from the Torre del Cantal is an invitation to escape!
