A few words about Alfarnatejo

Alfarnatejo is located in Axarquia in the province of Málaga.

It is a small white village where time has stood still. It is surrounded by beautiful scenery. Together with the neighbouring village of Alfarnate, it is known as the “Pyrenees of the Costa del Sol”.

It is known for having sheltered many bandits in the 19th century who came to hide here.

The origins of the village

The names Alfarnate and Alfarnatejo have a common origin. Both villages were called Los Alfarnates, and their name dates back to the time of Al-Andalus and comes from the Arabic word al-farnat, which means flour mill.

It is located behind the church.

The fountain is nothing special. However, it is worth a visit because of the ceramics that pay tribute to the women who used to wash clothes here.

Walking around the village

A walk around the village takes just a few minutes.

The surroundings of Alfarnatejo

Alfarnatejo is a great place for hiking. The peaks of Chamizo, Gallo and Vilo, and the Sierra de Caramolos can be found here.

Among these peaks, there are spectacular gorges, ravines, water springs and the Sabar River. The Tajos (gorges) del alto del Fraile, Doña Ana and Tajo de Gomer are magnificent for hiking.

On these hikes, you can come across beautiful prickly pears:
