A few words about Triana de Velez Malaga
Triana is a small locality in Axarquia in the province of Málaga. The village is attached to the municipality of Velez-Malaga.
The locality of Triana de Velez, like Triana de Sevilla, derives its origin from the Arabic word, Atrayana, which meant “on the other side of the river”.
Originally, the first inhabitants were settled in La Zorilla. One day, they moved to the “other side of the river” (atrayana), because in winter they could find themselves completely cut off from the rest of the world for several weeks.
Even today, to get to La Zorilla, you have to cross the riverbed (Benamargosa), which is of course mostly dry.
What to see in Triana de Velez?
The hamlet of la Zorilla (old Triana)
It is a lost hamlet, where time has stopped.
Its few houses are very colourful in this haven of peace.
A must-see, you get a feeling of total disconnection.
The Buddhist temple of Triana, Velez Malaga
This is the oldest Buddhist Kalachakra temple in the whole of the West! It is located about 400 meters from the Torre Atalaya.
Velez Malaga and Torre del Mar can be seen quite clearly from the Buddhist temple.
Atalaya Tower
This is a 15th century Arab watchtower located on the heights of Triana. It is a tower that is very typical of that period.
From this tower you can see many villages in the Axarquia: Benamocarra, Iznate, Vélez-Málaga, Almáchar, Comares, La Viñuela, Periana, Canillas de Aceituno, Riogordo, Cútar and Alcaucín.
You can also see the Tejeda and Almijara mountain ranges
What to see around the village
The village of Benamargosa is just a few kilometres from Triana and is well worth a visit.
Benamargosa, long known as “Little Gibraltar” is surrounded by tropical fruit fields.
