A few words about Benagalbon
Benagalbon is located in Axarquia in the province of Malaga.
Benagalbon was an important white village in Axarquia until 1950. With the arrival of the train, the population moved to the seaside. This is how Rincon de la Victoria became the main town.
Finally, this village has been able to preserve its customs, its typical atmosphere, and the feeling of a gentle way of life that you feel when you walk through it. Its mountain and sea view environment offers beautiful panoramas.
The first inhabitants of Benagalbon
The first inhabitants were the Neanderthals, who lived in the caves around here. Remains of this era have been found in the fabulous Treasure Cave (see below).
Then the Phoenicians settled down, followed by the Phoceans and then the Moors in the period of Al-Andalus.
During these periods Benagalbon developed the cultivation of vines and mulberry trees to feed the silkworms. The village will be an important centre of wine and silk production.
The origin of the village’s name
Under al-Andalus, a Berber tribe settled here, and gave its name to the village, the Galb-un tribe. After the reconquest the names of the villages were Spanishised, which gave the name: Benagalbon.
Not far away, there is another village founded by another Berber tribe: Benamocarra.
