This small village has been classified as a Historical-Artistic Complex (Conjunto Histórico-Artistico) since 1969.
To discover it, the best thing is to wander through all its alleys as you please.

The sanctuary-chapel of the Virgen de la Peña and its viewpoint
It is one of the most famous attractions in Mijas. Numerous festivals are celebrated here, including that of the patron saint of the village: Santa Virgen de la Peña.
This sanctuary is a sacred place. It was built directly into the rock in 1548. The story goes that in 1536 some children observed that a dove came to land on this rock in the same place every day. Intrigued, the children’s fathers searched the site and discovered an empty rock with religious objects inside and a representation of the Virgin.
Right next to it is the Mirador de la Peña which offers an exceptional view of the coast. On a clear day (without heat haze) you can see the African coast from this viewpoint. You can see exactly the Rif mountain range in Morocco.
A “noria”, a wheel
Next to it you can see an old wheel (dating from 1900) which was used to draw water from a well. In those days, mullets were used to draw the water used by the inhabitants of the village.
The Botanical Garden of the Wall,
The Wall Walk, as it is called, is a real treat to walk along. It runs along the old city wall and offers its visitors many plants to discover.
At the end of this walk, you will also have the mirador de la Sierra, which offers a beautiful view of the coast as far as the Strait of Gibraltar. On a clear day you can also see the African coast.
The fortress and wall of Mijas
The remains of this fortress take us back to the history of Andalusia in the Middle Ages.
It is a beautiful legacy of the Moorish past of Mijas.
The church of the Inmaculada Concepción
This walk will also take you to the church of the Inmaculada Concepción.
This church was built on the ruins of a former mosque in the 1550s. Its bell tower dates from the time of the wall and was originally a defensive tower!
From this location, it was possible to cover dozens of kilometres of the mountains and the coast.
The plaza de toros
The Plaza de Toros de Mijas, built in 1900, is quite unusual in its shape.
It is indeed oval and has only two stands facing each other.
You can visit it for 3 euros. During the year you can attend several horse shows and flamenco performances.
The Santana neighbourhood
It is a popular area with many beautiful streets.
There is also the Nuestra Señora de los Remedios hermitage, also known as the church of Santa Ana…
The chapel and San Sebastian Street
As you approach the central square of the village, you can cross the beautiful San Sebastian street and its chapel.
The City Museum, a historical ethnographic museum in Mijas Pueblo
This small museum allows you to discover many aspects of life in the village in the past.
All the tools of the houses of the past century can be seen, as well as everything that was used for the elaboration of olive oil, the cultivation of the vineyard and the production of wine.
As an aside: If you’re interested in discovering the olive harvest, olive oil production and how to taste and recognise good olive oil, here’s an idea.
A local and English speaking guide in Nerja and Torrox offers an olive oil excursion to discover and understand everything. I have some wonderful memories of this Tour with Cipriano, the guide.
