What is a via ferrata?

A via ferrata in Andalucia (as elsewhere) is a route located in a rock face, equipped with specific elements (cables, ladders, steps…). On most via ferrata there can also be Tibetan bridges, pendulums and zip lines. This is also known as “vertical hiking”.

The origin of this word is Italian, even if the first via ferrata were born in Austria in the 19th century.

In Italy, the first “vie ferrate” appeared in the Dolomites around 1914. They had a military function for moving soldiers and equipment.

Today it has become a very popular sporting activity, in direct contact with nature.

The via ferrata is accessible to anyone in good physical condition and not prone to vertigo. These routes are often possible from the age of 10.
